If you don’t use harsh chemicals and you live in a tick laden area of the country, you need this homemade tick repellent recipe. In Tennessee, we have lots of woods and high grasses and lots of ticks. Not only do they attach to our dogs, they tend to seek out any human who travels their way. What’s wrong with ticks? Why do we dread finding one on or near us? Well, no one likes the thought of something burrowed into their skin, especially a little critter who carries diseases such as:
The Lone Star tick can even cause beef, pork and venison allergies. And ticks are just downright annoying and gross! So the best thing to do is avoid having to deal with the itchy culprits by keeping them off of you.
This homemade tick repellent is easy to make, and best of all, it works.
Gather your ingredients.
Heat the oil and beeswax to melt.
Add essential oils to the oil and wax.
Label your salve so you know what it is. I have forgotten more than once what was in a jar…
Now simply take a very small amount (this is potent stuff, y’all!) and rub on legs, feet, arms or where you feel you need it. We also make a spray version to use on clothing and pets. We use this salve on our ankles and legs.
Photosensitivity notice**If you're going to use this repellent on areas of the body that will be exposed to the sun, either leave out the lemon oil or wear clothing to cover.
Would you like to turn it into a spray? Simply combine 1/2 cup of vinegar, witch hazel, cheap vodka or distilled water with the essential oils and place in a spray bottle. You’ll need to shake the bottle before use to make sure the oils will distribute throughout.
